Donations From Gambling Casino Operators

A Kansas group called Citizens 4 Recall has announced a campaign to recall, or impeach, several lawmakers. The group has targeted state lawmakers who accepted political contributions made by gambling casino operators.

The lawmakers, who are from the south- central region of the state, say that they oppose efforts to set up a gambling casino in their area. However, they nonetheless saw fit to accept campaign contributions, totaling $44,000, from gambling casino operators.

For this reason, the people behind Citizens 4 Recall say that the legislators were guilty of ignoring the wishes of the people they represent. They argue that the breach of the public trust represented by the gambling casino operator contributions constitutes misconduct, which is one of three grounds for recalling a state legislator.

The procedure for recalling a legislator in Kansas begins with an application for a petition, which must be signed by at least 10 percent of the number of people that voted for the legislator when he or she was elected. If the application is approved, the group must collect signatures from 40% of the original voters. Next, a special election is held.
