Horry County, South Carolina is currently faced with a momentous decision on what to do about the offshore gambling barges that operate in the county’s waters.

There are three offshore gambling barges in Conway that will either have to be phased out over a five year, or taxed for 10% of their revenue, according to South Carolina state law.

Some area lawmakers fear that the offshore gambling barge owners will fight either a request for more gambling revenues, or an attempt to force them to close or to take their business elsewhere.

If the offshore gambling barge owners do decide to fight both of the options, county officials fear that they will soon have multiple and protracted lawsuits on their hands.
“If we are going to get sued in March, I need to put that in my budget and prepare for it,” County Attorney John Weaver said.

Weaver said that he would not be surprised if the offshore gambling barge operators decided to press charges, but that he did not know if they could afford a long- running lawsuit. He predicted that a lawsuit would cost the casino boat operators around $10 million.

A Lehigh University class president and all- around nice guy whose internet casinos gambling addiction led him to rob a bank to recover losses has checked into a mental health treatment facility.

Greg Hogan, who is accused of having robbed a Wachovia Bank in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has recently checked into a Louisiana clinic for help with his internet casinos gambling addiction, according to his attorney John Waldron. Waldron said that Hogan is there to explore why he was so desperate as to rob a bank.
“That’s one of the reasons why we have him in therapy,” Waldron said. “That’s the million-dollar question a judge is going to ask.”
Hogan will be at the mental health facility, which has a specialty in treating internet casinos gambling addictions, for 26 days.
Hogan, who is a sophomore and president of Lehigh’s Class of 2008, was $5,000 in debt from internet casinos gambling when he decided to rob the bank. He got away with $2,871 but was arrested a few hours later at his fraternity house.

Hogan’s preliminary hearing is to take place in early March. The hearing will take place before District Judge Carl Balliet.
